Curriculum
Indonesian School “Duta
Teruna” Yangon was originally
founded as a diplomatic school. Its
purpose was to provide primary and
high school education for the
children of the Indonesian Embassy
staff and Indonesian families living
in Myanmar. Therefore, the school
implemented the Indonesian
curriculum with Indonesian language
as the tool of communication and
Indonesian-language books as the
source for the teaching and learning
process.
When the school changed in 2004 to
become the Indonesian International
School Yangon (IISY), it started
taking students from Myanmar and
other international communities in
Yangon. With the change there was a
need to upgrade all aspects of the
curriculum to that of an
internationally acceptable standard.
Starting from 2007/2008, IISY now
combines Indonesian, local and
international curricula. This
decision was taken with the
following criteria in mind:
1. Requirements of parents and
students
2. Supporting structures available
in the IISY environment
3. The potential and limitations for
the development of IISY.
To accommodate the need of
Indonesian students, IISY applies
Indonesian curriculum by referring
to the Indonesia’s National Standard
of Education as stated by the
Department of National Education.
The curriculum is called Kurikulum
Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan/Educational
Unit Curriculum (KTSP). This
curriculum consists of: TK
(Kindergarten), SD (Elementary
School), SMP (Junior High School),
and SMA (Senior High School). The
students are expected to sit for the
National Final Examination based on
the Graduation Competition Standards
for each subject according to the
level of education.
For Myanmar and other nationalities,
IISY is implementing an
internationally accepted curriculum.
Following studies into various
international curricula, it was
decided that IISY should use the
International General Certificate of
Secondary Education (IGCSE)
curriculum. The curriculum prepares
students to sit for the IGCSE exams
at the end of level 10. Successful
students receive the IGCSE
certificate which is an
internationally recognised
qualification.
The initial recommendation was to
phase in the IGCSE curriculum
starting with two subjects, English
and mathematics. The phase in period
began at the commencement of the
academic year 2007/2008. It is
planned to add another two subjects
in the following academic year. The
target is to have all students sit
the IGCSE exams in all subjects by
2009/2010. |
